Most states that I am familiar with WILL REQUIRE you to have a hunting license for taking deer, period, whether you choose to gun hunt, archery hunt, or muzzleloader hunt. The hunting of the animal is licensable, not just your method of taking the game.





Now there are special seasons set up for archery and bow hunting, which typically open before general gun season, but you'll still need a license to take game or attempt to take game during those periods.

Bow season is first because it is quiet and it does not spook the deer. Also, Archery is more difficult and it gives a person the bulk of the deer to choose from. It is set up to allow for Archery season to be a sport.
Are you inquiring as a convicted felon who has a firearms restriction? If so, you still need a license, but the DNR and law enforcement may cross reference having a gun deer license with the owner also using/and having firearms. A serious infraction if true. It is legal to buy a gun deer license, just not to use it with a modern firearm. Most states do not consider muzzleloaders firearms, and you may need a gun deer permit in order to participate in the muzzleloader hunt. That's fine as long as you only have a muzzleloader in your possession if they check up on it. Some people think that the fact that they are not stopped when purchasing a license as a sign that they are still allowed to firearms hunt. This is not so. An archery license should not pose any problems, neither should ownership of archery equipment. It may depend on individual restrictions (probation) however.
