Since gun and black powder are both obsolete, what do modern guns use instead?

Neither are obsolete by any stretch of the imagination. Both are still very much in use today.

Smokeless powder was invented by a French chemist named Vielle. The first cartridge it was used in was the 8mm Lebel.....NOT the .30-30Since gun and black powder are both obsolete, what do modern guns use instead?
Your question is flawed. You asked about ';gun and black powder,'; and I assume you mean gunpowder and black powder. Well, blackpowder is no longer used in modern firearms, but the term gunpowder refers to blackpowder, smokeless, etc. It is a broad term. Anyway, modern firearms use smokeless powder. It's more efficient, smokes less, and is more stable. All around a better propellant.Since gun and black powder are both obsolete, what do modern guns use instead?
smokeless powder isnt obsolete. Neither is black powder. Just depends on what you like to play or hunt with. If your talking advanced military technology, they still mostly have firearms that use smokeless powder. There are some experimental weapons that use radio waves and such but those probably wont be used for a while by the military. I've only really seen those on a show called future weapons though. They were also talking bullets that can be programmed when to burst.
Whatever gave yo the idea that either muzzleloding firearms or black powder are obsolete. Couldn't be further from the truth.

In fact, muzzleloading is one of the fastest growing of the shooting sports.

Rather than black powder, modern firearms use smokeless powder. The first cartridge designed to use in was the .30-30
Modern smokeless propellants are generally single-based with nitrocellulose as the primary component, but there are lots of additives: retardants and graphite coatings, as well as the shape of the granules being designed for the desired effect. There are some double-based propellants that contain a bit of nitroglycerine as well as the nitrocellulose.
Neither guns or black power is obsolete.

Modern black powder shooters shoot black powder. Modern cartridges use smokeless powder.
guncotton is mainly used now in all modern weapons as it is smokeless and has a powerful charge
