DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! Not is it probably illegal, under many laws, both Federal and state, the making of 'black' powder is HIGHLY DANGEROUS, as it is one of the most volatile and unstable compounds there is.
Nitro based 'smokeless' powder making is so complex that it requires thousands of dollars of specialized chemical production equipment.
SO, forget powder-making! Leave this dangerous business to the TRAINED professionals! How do you make homemade Black Powder? Or any time of gun powder?
You can google up the formula; but would be much wiser to just buy what you need at the store. It is dangerous stuff to make and handle; ever notice how fireworks factories blow up and kill everybody? Even if you do everything right it can still be set off by a spark of static electricity. Use pyrodex instead for shooting. How do you make homemade Black Powder? Or any time of gun powder?
You don't.
You buy it in 1lb, 4lb, or 8lb jugs.
Just to purchase the components in some areas you will need to sign for them and possibly trigger a visit from the authorities.
You have to get the mix just right to get the type of powder you need. Different percentages of the ingredients the other posters have listed will get you different types of powder - everything from useless fizzles to the type of powder used in fireworks to gunpowder. Experimenting with making it without training will either burn down your house or get you killed. It is an EXACT process better left to professionals. Buy the ready made stuff.
Crude gunpowder is mostly saltpeter, some charcoal, and a little sulfur, and the percentages vary wildly depending on your source but will work across a wide range. This is what was used in the very earliest days of firearms. Learning how to ';corn'; the powder was a large step forward, but it's a good way to have an accident at home, so I wouldn't recommend it. The same is true with nitrocellulose. It's pretty simple in a controlled environment if you aren't worried about uniformity or adding the retardants and other minor components, but it's not something you'd want to do at home.
The first step in making homemade black powder is to gosign up for a good ';pre-need'; burial insurance plan.
You can actually get everything you need to make black powder form your local drug store.
75% saltpetre (KNO3 (potassium nitrate))
15% charcoal
10% sulfur
by weight
Modern smokeless gunpowder which is known as nitrocellulose gun powder is a little more difficult to make.
Its a mixture of
Nitrocellulose
Nitroglycerin
Diphenylamine
Ethyl Centralite
Rosin
and Polyester
This varies based on brand and powder type. I'd stick to just making black powder if I were you.
I would stay away form homemade black powder or any homemade gun powder. It is just to easy to have an accident. If you shop around, factory produced stuff isn't that expensive. Just use the factory stuff for the piece of mind that you will get to keep your sight, all ten fingers, and your life.
