are they the same thing? Is black powder another word for gun powder?
Black powder is a type of gun powder. Black Powder was the gun powder up till the end of the 19th century when the first smokeless propellants were manufactured like Cordite and Nitro Cellulose. From there we then have the modern smokeless powders we know today.
Smokeless Powder should never be substituted when Black Powder is called for either in a muzzle loader or black powder cartridge. There are Black Powder substitutes like Pyrodex and Triple 7.Is black powder another word for gun powder?
No. Black Powder and Gun Powder are completely different compounds. Black Powder is several hundred years old and is considered an explosive and is somewhat unstable, much care must be taken when using it. Modern Gun Powder (smokeless) is a fairly new invention and does not ';explode';, is very stable to shock and temperature extremes.
Black powder is one form of gun powder. There are two general forms of gun powder in general use today. There is modern smokeless powder and there is black powder. Most modern powders are either a nitrocellulose base or a nitroglycerine base or a combination fo the two. Black powder is a combination of three simple ingredients, sulfur, potassium nitrate and charcoal. Smokeless powders are progressive burning meaning that the more pressure they generate, the faster they burn. They reach a higher maximum pressure than black powder but they do it more slowly. Black powder burns at the same rate regardless of the pressure and reaches a maximum pressure more quickly. However, the maximum pressure reached by black powder is much less than that reached by smokeless powder. Because of the burning rates and the pressures reached by smokeless powders, they must never be substituted for black powder in a muzzleloader. If they are, the muzzle loader becomes something like a pipe bomb on a stick.
yes and no, black powder has been used in older firearms, but it has the problem of burning dirty and creating large amounts of smoke. because of this near the end of the 19th century we switched to smokeless powder, this type of gun powder is cleaner, produces higher pressures, and is smokeless hence the name. black powder is gun powder but they shouldn't be used interchangeably .
yes people use this mainly in muskets (old muzzel loaders). todays bullets use whats called smokeless powder. they still use black powder but when it gets wet and/or old it doesnt work right. smokeless powder will fire if used in a period of 10 years or better, and sometimes if its wet
Black powder was the first gun powder. Is simple to make from carbon, sulfur, and saltpeter. It is the bang in firecrackers.
Modern guns do not use black powder, but use more complex formulations that burn much longer.
BLACK POWDER IS A GUN POWDER THAT IS AN EXPLOSIVE!!!
SMOKELESS POWDER IS A GUN POWDER THAT IS A PROPELLANT.
HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!
ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.
Black powder is older and is used for muzzle loaders. In modern day bullets, the powder is white
Black powder was and is used in muzzle loaders modern powders burn faster and cleaner.
