They make barrel cleaners that you put into a black powder rifle barrel now that is a foam. Claims are you just put it in, then wait 30 minutes and put 4 or so patches threw it and it's clean. Has any one tried these products? Do they really work that well?Black Powder Foam Barrel Cleaners?
I've had real good luck with them so far. After the barrel is dry I take a patch with remoil and leave a very light film of oil in the bore. When I get ready to shoot ol' smokey again I run a dry patch down the bore to make sure its dry.Black Powder Foam Barrel Cleaners?
I'm in a Civil War reenacting group and we use black powder rifles. Instead of spending money on cleaners, try what we do.
We pour boiling water down the barrel and immediately drain. (Wear gloves because the barrel gets hot.) Repeat this until the water drains clear. All the residue in the barrel breaks loose. The water and barrel are so hot that any water left in the barrel evaporates extremely quickly. I have yet to meet anyone that has gotten a rusty barrel using this method.
And the water is environmentally friendly!
The foaming bore cleaners do help. It floods the barrel for great contact and you can work it everywhere with a nylon bristle brush for regular cleaning. NO, there are more than four patches going to be used.
I usually use the foam, wait, scrub, flush and repeat. Once done, oil her up for storage.
Had not heard of that yet. Sounds interesting though. Try it and tell us how well it works or not.
