they work wonderfullyCan a sabot round be used in a black powder gun instead of the typical black powder, ball, and cap?
Everyone is telling you that you can use sabot bullets in your muzzleloader instead of the patched round balls. This is not universally true. Whether or not a sabot bullet will work in a muzzleloader will depend on the twist rate of the rifling in the bore of the gun. The twist rate refers to the number of inches a projectile travels horizontally for each complete 360 deg. of rotation. Bores with a slow twist rate such as 1 in 60 inches will not stabilize a conical bullet and you will have no accuracy. The bullet will exit the muzzle and will quickly start to tumble due to lack of sufficient rotational speed. However, if your bore has a twist rate of something like 1 in 48 inches or faster, it will stabilize a conical bullet and the sabot bullets will work just fine. But, if the twist rate is much faster than 1 in 48 inches, it will not stabilize a patched round ball. A patched round ball requires a slow rate of twist and a conical requires a faster rate of twist. So, as to whether your gun will shoot sabot bullets will depend on the twist rate. Your owners manual should tell you what your twist rate is. If your manual does not tell you, you can determine it for yourself. Use your cleaning rod and a tight fitting patch. Lube the patch and run it all thet way to the breach block. Mark your cleaning rod at the muzzle by drawing a ring completely around it exactly at the muzzle. Then make a small tick mark exactly at the top of the rod in line with the front sight. Now carefully extract the cleaning rod allowing it to turn and follow the lands in the bore. When the tick mark has rotated to the bottom of the barrel exactly opposite the front sight, measure how far you have pulled the rod out by measuring from the muzzle to the mark that you made around the rod. This is a half rotation so you will need to multiply this distance by 2 to get your twist rate. Let's say that you pulled your rod out until the tick mark had made a half rotation and you had measured 24 inches that you had pulled the rod out of the bore. That means that the twist rate for that barrel is 1 in 48 inches. You might want to repeat this a few times to be sure that you get an accurate measurement. Can a sabot round be used in a black powder gun instead of the typical black powder, ball, and cap?
Yep.
I don't use 'em but lots of folks do. I'll stick with patched round ball or good conicals myself.
Doc
Sure can, and they work excellent too!! really improves the performance.
Of course. Just check any catalog, they're bound to be listed most anywhere
