Black powder rifle not firing?
My muzzleloader primer is not firing. i have cleaned the action thinking that it was stuck or what not and it still didnt help. i bought a new spring for it too and i still cant get the primers to go off. any suggestions?Black powder rifle not firing?
Make sure you have pin to primer contact. If not check to make sure bolt is snug against primer plug. If it's not, the firing pin isn't touching it. If it is making contact with the primer, the(pin) you may have a bad batch of primer's. Maybe contaminated from moisture, oil's or the like. If it's making a loud bang from the primer going off and not firing clean the flash hole out in the plug. It is imperative to keep muzzle loaders clean to performance standards. No matter if it's stainless or not. The breech plugs always rust even setting up. And i've found it better to keep antiseize grease on this area even when hunting. If it's none of the above have your pin checked for length, and bolt to breech plug distance.Black powder rifle not firing?
Your nipple could be dirty as heck. If the end is rusted or burnt up it may not be contacting the primer correctly, so if doesn't fire.
It also could be the the nipple has just worn down too, so the primer is not getting seated right on the nipple, so it never contacts the nipple when the hammer hit the primer. Thus, no BOOM!
One if you are using an old style, remove the nipple and clean it, check to see if the hammer has full travel, if you have set trigger make sure the hammer is falling hard enough. I backed off on the set trigger to much on one that I owner-ed and the hammer did not hit the cap hard enough to make it go off%26gt; I had to reset the hammer fall. Another gun I saw would not stay adjusted and would fail to make the cap go off. If your caps got wet the same thing will happen.

How do they make black powder?
You mix charcoal, sulfur, and saltpeter in a bowl (need the formula?) with a wooden spoon and add enough water to it til it's a thick, doughy mass. You then take that thick paste and roll it out as thin as you can get it with a rolling pin or a wooden rod/dowel onto a long sheet of aluminum foil. Lay that out in the sun to dry. When it's dry and crumbly, you break it into bits and strain it through some window screen to get your grains the right size. Black Powder was manufactured throughout history in the United States, by combining Potassium Nitrate (Salt Peter) , Ground Charcoal and Pulverized (Powdered) Sulfur..Historically it was made in a wooden drum or barrel that was mounted horizontally on a frame and had a wooden rod centered thru it so it would ';Tumble'; and spin with the turn of a hand crank or motor. The ingredients were added along with several pounds of small pure lead shot,(used to grind the gunpowder because lead didn't produce sparks or static electricity) then tumbled until all of the ingredients blended together and were uniform in texture. The longer the mixture tumbled...the finer the powder would be.
Black Powder is NOT just another name for Gunpowder.
Modern smokeless powders are made in a completely different manner..........

This is only for what is traditionally known as black powder, and there are several substitutes you can buy which are easier to clean up after a range session. Don't try making it yourself, as the amounts of each weren't given, and if you get the formula off, you might kill yourself.
By grinding and mixing saltpetre (potassium nitrate), charcoal, and sulphur. Soft metals such as brass are used for grinding to the required fineness as these do not give off sparks.

Black powder rifle CVA or Traditions ?
I was looking at an entry level black powder rifle for deer hunting.
It seems CVA and Traditions make a few models for about $200.

I'd suggest you go with the CVA. Get a .54 caliber if you can. The .54 caliber is a great compromise between the velocity of the .56's and smaller and the heavier bullets of the .58 caliber and larger. If you can't get a .54, get a .50 Caliber.

Wow, you could almost use this with most anything that you're breading, either meats, poultry, fish or a mixed shell fish dish, either sauteing or deep frying, I see this recipe as a beginning to almost any dish, really. This would be my first pan of a coating, next would be an egg wash and a breadcrumb coating, but starting with a seasoned flour bath only enhances the flavor of almost any dish! Happy Cooking to you!
